| Humans Killing Too Many Grizzly Bears in Alberta (Mar/10) |

Human caused deaths of grizzly bears in Alberta reached unsustainable levels in 2009. Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) reported that 17 grizzly bears were killed by humans in 2009 and almost that many again were relocated. Scientific research indicates that unknown poaching kills likely accounted for an additional five to eight undocumented grizzly bear mortalities.... read more

| Grizzly Bear Hunt Suspended for Another Year in Alberta (Mar/10) |

The Alberta government’s recent decision to suspend the province’s grizzly bear hunt for 2010 is good
news for the bears. With a current population estimate of 691 bears in Alberta, the species requires

| Major New Report Calls for Managing 50% of BC for Climate/Conservation (Jan/10) |

A coalition of environmental organizations, including Y2Y, has released a report authored by Dr. Jim Pojar, senior forest ecologist, noting that intact forests play key roles in storing carbon, mitigating climate impacts and conserving biodiversity. The report calls on the B.C. government to implement a climate conservation strategy that includes managing at least 50 per cent of the province’s land base for these objectives.... read more

| Y2Y Comments on Draft Banff Park Management Plan (Nov/09) |

Banff National Park is a key part of the largest contiguous block of protected areas within the entire Y2Y region. Park managers recently published a draft management plan that will update the previous plan, published in 1997. Where the 1997 plan was focused on improving ecological integrity and connectivity, the current draft emphasizes increasing visitation by 2% per year.... read more

| Wildsight and Y2Y Grateful for New Signs at Kootenay Pass (Sep/09) |

Wildsight and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative are applauding the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) for its recent efforts on behalf of road safety and mountain caribou protection.
The MoTI installed wildlife crossing signs along a seven-kilometre stretch of “deadly” Highway 3. The signs could help reduce wildlife deaths and increase human safety at the summit of Kootenay Pass, where the highway crosses through critical mountain caribou winter range.

| International RAVE to Document Canada’s Threatened Flathead River Valley (Jul/09) |

On July 18th a team of renowned photographers, videographers, writers, conservationists, and scientists joined forces to complete a Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition (RAVE) in the Flathead River Valley of British Columbia. The expedition is a project of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP); a Virginia based non-profit that works to empower global conservation efforts through photography.
